SAINTS MARCH IN

Saints boss Gus MacPherson put out a strong side and they dominated for most of the match, giving the home defence an excellent workout.

They opened the scoring in controversial circumstances in the first half, when Ben Gordon was injured in the penalty area and his team-mates expected ref Stevie O'Reilly to halt play. However Saints played to the whistle, and Stephen O'Donnell beat keeper Dave McEwan for the opener.

Early in the second half McEwan spilled a shot, and the ever alert striker Craig Dargo netted from close range. The final goal was a fine shot from striker Billy Mehmet shortly after he came on as a sub.

A rash of second half substitutions from both sides included young keeper Michael White coming on for McEwan. Playing as a trialist from the start was Denis McLaughlin who was part of Sons championship-winning side last season but is still a Hearts player.

As on Tuesday, a collection was taken for the Gordon Lennon Memorial Fund, and his father, partner Kelly and other members of the family attended the game.
