They lost 3-1 away to Arbroath in a gale-force wind at Gayfield Park, their second defeat by that score in their first two league matches. But there were positives for manager Jim Chapman and his players as they dominated much of the possession.

Barry Sellars opened the scoring with a bizarre but brilliant 60 yard lob which the wind carried over the head of young keeper Michael White who had no chance of saving it.

Just after half-time the Red Lichties made it two when veteran striker Steve Hislop netted in a goalmouth scramble.

Dumbarton kept fighting back but had little luck in front of goal until shortly before the end, when a Roddy Hunter effort found its way in at the far post. Sons threw everything at their hosts in a bid for a late equaliser, but it was the home side who added to their tally with a breakaway goal by Robbie Ross.

Sons had former Celtic and Airdrie United striker Simon Lynch on the bench as a trialist, and he came on for the final few minutes.
