A crowd of 684 at the seafront stadium endured a dreadful first half despite the sunny and wind-free conditions. The teams seemed to cancel each other out, and there was little in the way of goalmouth incidents at either end.

Sons came out in the second half and took charge of the game, and in the 58th minute a cross from young winger Alan Cook, making only his third first team start, reached striker Denis McLaughlin unmarked on the right, and he had plenty of time to slot the ball past keeper Stuart Baillie.

McLaughlin seemed revitalised and produced by his best form of the season after that, constantly troubling the East Fife defence.

His side came close on several occasions — notably a header from Roddy Hunter which went over the bar — but could not extend the lead. At the other end keeper Jan Vojacek had few saves to make, but did well to save a Sharpe effort from close range.
