After a 0-0 draw at Cappielow the previous Saturday, first division Morton arrived determined to put their second division opponents to the sword in this third round replay.

James Grady's men had the bulk of the possession throughout a closely contested tie, but rarely troubled Sons keeper Jan Vojacek in the first half. A goal might have come at the other end shortly before the interval when Dumbarton had a series of corner kicks, and Scott Chaplain came close with a shot.

In the second half it was back to one way traffic towards Sons goal, and the home keeper saved his side on several occasions before Morton sub Brian Graham nodded home at the back post with 15 minutes to go.

Sons had to adopt a more attacking game now, and the pace of substitute Derek Carcary troubled the Morton defence as he created scoring chances.

But to the joy of the large visiting support the men in blue and white held on to clinch the prize of a home visit from Celtic in the fourth round.
