In front of a stunned New Bayview crowd of 581, Sons got off to a flying start when centre half Ben Gordon rose to meet a corner and headed home the opener in just five minutes.

Soon after East Fife player manager Stevie Crawford, a former Scottish internationalist, tapped home from close range.

However midfielder Scott Chaplain restored Sons lead with a chip from the edge of the box after good play by his front men — the third goal in the first 15 minutes.

The visitors were playing exciting, fast and incisive football, and this was illustrated by a brilliant third goal from striker Derek Carcary who burst clear and, despite being forced wide, beat the keeper and netted from a very narrow angle.

Leading 3-1 at half-time, Sons must have expected a home comeback in the second period, and the Fifers threw everything but the kitchen sink at them.

However they defended valiantly and frequently broke at speed to the other end, and the home side's only reward was a brilliant lobbed goal by Stevie Crawford.
