It was Sons second pre-season game and the first at home, attracting a good crowd of over 600. Manager Jim Chapman gave his new signing from junior side Cumnock, Graham Wilson, his debut in a Dumbarton jersey, and also fielded a trialist no.9.

It looked an even contest from the start, with the home side in no way overawed by Thistle. It took only ten minutes before new vice-captain Andy Geggan opened the scoring with a flashing strike from outside the box to the delight of the home support.

At the other end Thistle strikers Liam Buchanan and ex-Celt Simon Donnelly were always a threat and comeback keeper Stephen Grindlay had to make some important saves during the first half.

After the break Sons seemed comfortable in holding on to their lead, but 15 minutes from the end the defence failed to clear and Donnelly beat Grindlay from close range.

Undeterred Dumbarton pressed forward and went for a winner, and it finally arrived three minutes from time when Ross Campbell, signed a few weeks ago from Dunfermline Athletic, burst in from the right and sent a stunning volley past keeper Hinchcliffe and into the top corner to give his side a morale-boosting victory.
