In the absence of Paul Maxwell who is on holiday, manager Jim Chapman fielded former Saints striker Junior Mendes for a second trial game at no.9 and started with a strong team — though in the second half both sides used substitutes galore.

Sons matched their full-time opponents throughout the 90 minutes and thoroughly deserved to share the spoils.

St Mirren took the lead midway through the first half when Stephen Robb headed home a Craig Dargo cross from close range, but only a few minutes later the home side were level when Andy Geggan played in Derek Carcary who netted with a superb curling shot.

It remained end to end throughout, despite all the personnel changes, and once more the visitors took the lead when sub keeper Michael White brought down striker Gareth Wardlaw and his fellow strikeR Michael Higdon converted the resultant penalty.

Sons pressed on and got their reward when a fine cross from Iain Chisholm went over the defence to Derek Carcary, and he cut in to beat keeper Paul Gallacher — son of the Sons goalkeeping coach Jim Gallacher — from close range.
