SONS STRUGGLE AGAINST BANKIES

Scott Chaplain fires in a shot.
28-Jul-2010
In a match which attracted a rather poor crowd on a sunlit evening, manager Jim Chapman fielded a team largely composed of youngsters just out the 19s, together with three trialists.First team men Scott Chaplain, captain for the night, and Iain Chisholm provided experience, and in the early stages Bankies looked a little overawed by the pace and invention of their hosts. But gradually they came into the game and it was honours even for the rest of the first half.
After the break the visitors took charge, and in six minutes Alan Cook handled in the box and gave away a penalty. Young keeper Michael White saved brilliantly from Steven Dymock, but Mark Hailstones reacted far quicker than the defence, reached the loose ball first, and hammered home the opener.
For the rest of the half, and with the usual rush of substitutes from both sides, Bankies looked more likely to add to their lead. However two minutes from the end Dumbarton's midfield sub Martin McNiff netted with a long range screamer of a shot — something the youngster is becoming rather good at.
